Most of the time the wedding season is pretty much wrapped up by mid November here in Charleston, and it usually won’t kick back up until March. I always look forward to this time because I get to finally catch up on some rest and tackle other photo related projects. But sometimes you have a couple that just won’t let you rest and demand that you come out for one last party of the year. Andy and Meghan wanted to throw a New Year’s Eve wedding, and after the talked to me about their plans I was really excited about it too. I first got to work with this couple during an engagement shoot, and it was easy to see that these two knew how to have a good time. They took nothing too seriously and anytime a bride or groom demands that we drink and party with them DURING their wedding I’m never one to decline. They started off the day at the Charleston Harbor Resort and had the reception over at the Tidewater Chapel across the street. So far this has been the only wedding I’ve shot where we brought in the new year but I hope it definitely won’t be my last.

Hilton Head Royal Port Clubhouse: Lindsay and JK

Sometimes out of state brides contact me and ask if I will photograph their wedding outside of Charleston. I love traveling and taking photos in new places so unless my schedule just doesn’t work out I almost always like venturing out of Charleston. Lindsay and JK were from Annapolis, MD and they were planning their wedding at the Hilton Head Island Royal Port Clubhouse. Lindsay was also interested in having some casual engagement style photos taken but she knew she and JK would not both be in South Carolina until just before the wedding. Luckily they were able to hang out in Charleston for a few days and we were able to meet up for a quick photo session. I don’t often get to photograph engagement style photos right before a wedding but if I could do it more often I would. Either Lindsay and JK were complete naturals or the excitement they had knowing the wedding was in a few days made it easy for me to pull out genuine smiles out of them. As for the wedding in Hilton Head a few days later, check out the slideshow below to see how it all came together. They had the most amazing sky and lighting for their ceremony I’ve ever seen! I’ll also remember this wedding because their friends had several hilarious photobooth photos by the end of the night….some of them made the final slideshow!

Wild Dunes Wedding: Heather and Dan

Wow this season has been so busy I haven’t had time to update my blog in quite awhile. Here is Heather and Dan’s wedding from the end of the 2010 season. Heather and Dan were living in Illinois while planning their Charleston wedding; I can only imagine how difficult the planning must be for a destination wedding. I was not able to actually meet the couple before the wedding which happens more than I like to admit but I guess that’s something you have to deal with time to time when schedules do not line up. That being said, Heather and Dan’s wedding was definitely one I’ll remember if for no other reason than they actually had a pushup contest during their reception! How To Shoot Wakeboarding In Charleston

When I’m not busy shooting weddings in Charleston, I spend a lot of my time pursuing other fields of photography. This last fall I wanted to setup a big wakeboard photoshoot here in Charleston and explore the idea of shooting wakeboarders in the studio which isn’t done very often. After about 4 days of shooting, over 30 assistants and wakeboarders, and countless hours of editing photos and video, the newest Fstoppers Original featuring yours truly has finally been released. Even if you aren’t into the technical side of photography you will probably still enjoy this video. Ad Campaign For Nikon Pocket Wizard FlexTT5 and MiniTT1 Units

As a Charleston wedding photographer, I depend on Pocket Wizards to remotely control my small flashes during portrait sessions, the reception, and when guests want to fire the photobooth. So when I was one of the few photographers contacted by Pocket Wizard to beta test their new Flex and Mini units I was really thrilled. When I shoot commercial photographs, I always try to make something that grabs people’s attention. So I knew I wanted to create a photograph that would not only show how the new Pocket Wizards were useful but also make an image that would have a strong visual impact. Seabrook Island Wedding : Rachel and Martin

I first met Rachel and Martin back in January, and they were planning their destination wedding in Charleston all the way from Massachusetts. They originally met in England were they went to college before relocating back to the East Coast. Needless to say, I found out that Europeans can not only out drink me but are also quite the dancers! Rachel and Martin planned their wedding ceremony at Middleton Plantation and then everyone traveled out to Seabrook Island for the reception at the beautiful Seabrook Island Clubhouse. You couldn’t ask for a better day for an outdoor wedding and the bubbles after the ceremony added for a unique touch. The guests at the reception absolutely loved the wedding photobooth and took over 800 photos within 2 hours. They also had one of the most unique departures I’ve experienced as all the guests launched candle powered luminaries into the sky. Middleton Plantation Wedding, Emily and Kevyn

Middleton Plantation is one of the best local plantations in Charleston for an outside wedding. Kevyn and Emily traveled to Charleston from Dallas, Texas and had a very intimate wedding at the crane pool side of the property. It’s always interesting working with couples from outside of the state since most of their friends and family usually have not yet visited Charleston. Like many of my clients, Kevyn and Emily were really excited about my wedding photobooth, and so we were able to set it up inside for the reception at the Pavilion. As a destination wedding photographer, my main goal is to capture images of everyone at the wedding being themselves, but with the photobooth, it allows guests to take images unlike anything I can take myself. Citadel / Hibernian Hall Wedding, Charlotte and Matt

As a wedding photographer based in downtown Charleston, I get to visit a lot of local venues and historic buildings. Charlotte and Matt decided to get married at the Summerall Chapel at the Citadel and have their reception at the Hibernian Hall on Meeting Street. I knew when I first met them that their wedding was going to be a blast! Their friends and family were a lot of fun and everyone took turns on the dance floor including their grandparents. The local Charleston Wedding Band Plane Jane rocked out classic wedding songs and brought the party crowd to their knees with a killer cover of Shout! All in all it was a beautiful day and a great gathering of friends and family. Shooting weddings like Matt and Charlotte’s always makes me appreciate my job.

Wild Dunes Wedding : Laura and Jesse

I always tell clients that the number one reason a photo turns out successful has more to do with the energy shown in front of the camera than anything else. And when couples interact with each other naturally and affectionately my job becomes pretty easy. This was definitely the case with Laura and Jesse. They invited me to their wedding at Wild Dunes out on the Grand Pavilion. It is one of my favorite places to shoot wedding images on all of Isle of Palms mainly because there is so much variety. Most of my clients book me for my candid moments but Laura and Jesse really wanted a bunch of environmental portraits that showed off the beach location and venue. It seems like the phrase “posed photos” has a negative vibe among wedding photographers for some reason, but I personally love taking portraits as long as the couple is fun and enjoying themselves. I’ve included some of my favorite ‘formal’ photos below but check out the slideshow for the full wedding. My Experience Shooting Bon Jovi and David Bergman

As many of you know, I am the founder of the website www.Fstoppers.com which showcases behind the scenes videos of photographers working on their projects. I love photography of all sorts, and I wanted to create a website that could educate other photographers in a way that would be more fun than just simply reading articles. So Lee Morris and I started the video based site Fstoppers, and it has now become a major name within the online photography community.

From time to time, we create our own behind the scenes videos that often feature photographers we admire. David Bergman is a big Sports Illustrated photographer who has made the transition into shooting live events. He also has the most viewed US Presidential Inauguration photo of all time in his portfolio with his Barack Obama Gigapan image. So I was thrilled when he said he was on board to film an Fstoppers Original video featuring my childhood heros Bon Jovi! In the video, David discusses his previous work, reviews his equipment, and takes you on an all access preview of what it is like shooting for one of the biggest rock and roll bands in the world!
