Charleston Harbor Resort New Years Eve Wedding: Meghan and Andy

Most of the time the wedding season is pretty much wrapped up by mid November here in Charleston, and it usually won’t kick back up until March. I always look forward to this time because I get to finally catch up on some rest and tackle other photo related projects. But sometimes you have a couple that just won’t let you rest and demand that you come out for one last party of the year. Andy and Meghan wanted to throw a New Year’s Eve wedding, and after the talked to me about their plans I was really excited about it too. I first got to work with this couple during an engagement shoot, and it was easy to see that these two knew how to have a good time. They took nothing too seriously and anytime a bride or groom demands that we drink and party with them DURING their wedding I’m never one to decline. They started off the day at the Charleston Harbor Resort and had the reception over at the Tidewater Chapel across the street. So far this has been the only wedding I’ve shot where we brought in the new year but I hope it definitely won’t be my last.

Wild Dunes Wedding: Heather and Dan

Wow this season has been so busy I haven’t had time to update my blog in quite awhile. Here is Heather and Dan’s wedding from the end of the 2010 season. Heather and Dan were living in Illinois while planning their Charleston wedding; I can only imagine how difficult the planning must be for a destination wedding. I was not able to actually meet the couple before the wedding which happens more than I like to admit but I guess that’s something you have to deal with time to time when schedules do not line up. That being said, Heather and Dan’s wedding was definitely one I’ll remember if for no other reason than they actually had a pushup contest during their reception! Seabrook Island Wedding : Rachel and Martin

I first met Rachel and Martin back in January, and they were planning their destination wedding in Charleston all the way from Massachusetts. They originally met in England were they went to college before relocating back to the East Coast. Needless to say, I found out that Europeans can not only out drink me but are also quite the dancers! Rachel and Martin planned their wedding ceremony at Middleton Plantation and then everyone traveled out to Seabrook Island for the reception at the beautiful Seabrook Island Clubhouse. You couldn’t ask for a better day for an outdoor wedding and the bubbles after the ceremony added for a unique touch. The guests at the reception absolutely loved the wedding photobooth and took over 800 photos within 2 hours. They also had one of the most unique departures I’ve experienced as all the guests launched candle powered luminaries into the sky. Citadel / Hibernian Hall Wedding, Charlotte and Matt

As a wedding photographer based in downtown Charleston, I get to visit a lot of local venues and historic buildings. Charlotte and Matt decided to get married at the Summerall Chapel at the Citadel and have their reception at the Hibernian Hall on Meeting Street. I knew when I first met them that their wedding was going to be a blast! Their friends and family were a lot of fun and everyone took turns on the dance floor including their grandparents. The local Charleston Wedding Band Plane Jane rocked out classic wedding songs and brought the party crowd to their knees with a killer cover of Shout! All in all it was a beautiful day and a great gathering of friends and family. Shooting weddings like Matt and Charlotte’s always makes me appreciate my job.

Wild Dunes Wedding : Laura and Jesse

I always tell clients that the number one reason a photo turns out successful has more to do with the energy shown in front of the camera than anything else. And when couples interact with each other naturally and affectionately my job becomes pretty easy. This was definitely the case with Laura and Jesse. They invited me to their wedding at Wild Dunes out on the Grand Pavilion. It is one of my favorite places to shoot wedding images on all of Isle of Palms mainly because there is so much variety. Most of my clients book me for my candid moments but Laura and Jesse really wanted a bunch of environmental portraits that showed off the beach location and venue. It seems like the phrase “posed photos” has a negative vibe among wedding photographers for some reason, but I personally love taking portraits as long as the couple is fun and enjoying themselves. I’ve included some of my favorite ‘formal’ photos below but check out the slideshow for the full wedding. Charleston Wedding Photobooth

For the last two years or so I have been setting up a “photobooth” at many of the weddings I have shot. Surprisingly, I have found out that a lot of my clients were initially confused about my photobooth because it is technically not a booth at all. If you have ever been to a friend’s wedding and they had a photobooth, typically it is an old fashioned booth with a curtain like you would find in a mall. Those older photobooths can be a lot of fun but what happens when you want to get a bit crazier or want to include more than 2 or 3 people in you photograph? Well that’s why I designed a photobooth that wasn’t a booth at all! This photobooth takes up a small area usually just outside of the dance floor and individual couples or large groups can stand infront of the white screen and instantly take a bunch of creative photos that the bride and groom will see when they receive all of their wedding photos. The pictures are immediately displayed so everyone around can see, and it’s always a huge hit at the reception. I’ve given the band or DJ a run for their money on many occasions, but what I usually find is the photobooth helps encourage people to get up out of their seats and participate even more at the wedding and on the dance floor. I think Misty and Adam have known each other longer than any other couple I have photographed. They were good friends back in junior high school and years later as fate would have it, they fell in love. I first met Misty and her bridesmaids during her Bridal Shoot in downtown Charleston. I knew her wedding was going to be easy to photography because she was one of the happiest girls I’ve ever met. Living in Mount Pleasant, Misty and Adam decided to get married at the ION Creek Club. They had such a fun band and their friends made great use of the Photobooth. Check out their wedding photos below!

Kiawah Island Wedding Photography: Brent and Blair Beason

I think I met Brent and Blair back in the winter when they called me up to talk about having a wedding out at Kiawah Island’s Sanctuary. Kiawah Island is such a great place to have a wedding and it was fun hearing what this couple had planned. I knew their wedding was going to be fun from the first time I met them and shot their engagement photos. Usually it’s the guys who do not want to spend too much time taking photos but Brent came to the shoot with more ideas than I did. Having couples that are really affectionate towards each other and at times goofy really makes the photos come to life. At the wedding, Brent and Blair were surrounded by really fun friends (including Halle and Brian). Even the real Clemson Tiger mascot showed up during the ceremony. All in all a really fun time out at Kiawah Island and the wedding photos turned out great.

Charleston Wedding Season 2009 Recap

New York Engagement

I’ve never been to New York during the Christmas season but after having such an amazing trip, I can see why so many people head up to the big apple in December. Charleston, South Carolina is an amazing place but sometimes I miss the bitter cold that makes the holiday season feel like the holiday season. What can I say, I grew up in Alaska and enjoy the snow During my visit I scheduled an engagement shoot with Carlos and Hayley. We both wanted to shoot something that showed the city and after walking around Brooklyn a few days earlier, I knew the location was going to have to be near the Brooklyn Bridge. Here are a few images from their session and let me just say, it was the coldest photoshoot I have done yet! Holding a bunch of camera gear in 28 degree weather isn’t as fun as it sounds but when you have a location like NYC as your backdrop and a couple clearly in love it makes your efforts worth the cursing! Enjoy
